Steel-Signing Marks Major Milestone for Millom’s New Leisure Hub

24th September 2025

As NEC Supervisor on the Activating Community Health project, Baker Mallett is proud to witness a significant moment in Millom’s regeneration journey: the completion of the building’s steel frame, celebrated through a steel-signing ceremony—an event symbolic of the traditional ‘topping-out’ milestone.

This new activity and leisure facility forms a cornerstone of the Millom Town Deal, one of four transformative projects supported by £20.6 million from the UK Government’s Towns Fund, alongside vital match funding. The scheme reflects a shared commitment to improving community health, wellbeing, and economic resilience.

The project has drawn support from a wide range of stakeholders, including £1 million from the Copeland Community Fund and a £3.1 million grant from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority—part of its broader investment in sustainable change across Millom and its site communities. Additional funding has been provided by South Copeland GDF Community Partnership, CGP, Millom School, and Millom Town Council, underscoring the depth of local and national collaboration.

As NEC Supervisor, Baker Mallett has played a key role in ensuring that construction quality, programme compliance, and contractual integrity remain at the forefront of delivery. The steel frame completion marks a pivotal point in the build, enabling the transition to internal works and bringing the vision of a modern, inclusive leisure hub closer to reality.

Once complete, the facility will offer a swimming pool, sports hall, and fitness studios—all designed to serve as a dynamic space for health, recreation, and community connection. Beyond its physical footprint, the hub is set to enhance wellbeing, attract visitors, and stimulate local economic growth through increased footfall and spending.

This project is more than bricks and mortar—it’s about activating long-term community health and creating a space where Millom residents can thrive. Baker Mallett is honoured to support its delivery and proud to be part of a team shaping a brighter, healthier future for the town.
