Baker Mallett & Football: A Story That Runs Deeper Than the Game
Baker Mallett turns 107 years old this month, and as we’ve been reflecting on our history (and with another World Cup on the horizon), one theme keeps resurfacing… football. Not just as a sport, but as a thread that has quietly woven together some of Baker Mallett’s most iconic moments and most meaningful values.
Our relationship with football goes right back to our beginning. Our Quantity Surveyors worked on the original Wembley Stadium, the backdrop to some of the greatest moments in sporting history. Decades later, our team was trusted with the refurbishment of Lilleshall Hall, the very place where the 1966 World Cup team trained before lifting that elusive trophy.
And on our 100th birthday, football brought us home once more.
While digging through our archives, we had uncovered original photographs from 1923 FA Cup Final at Wembley. Rather than keeping them tucked away, we donated them to the National Football Museum so they could be shared, preserved and enjoyed by everyone. A small act, but one that felt true to who we are.
Because for us, football has always been more than a game. It’s been a way to create good.
That same centenary year at our birthday party, we raised £10,000 for Andy Burnham’s Tackle4Manchester campaign, using our special milestone to support people facing homelessness. And over the last decade, our 5‑a‑side tournaments have helped raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care, Child Bereavement UK, and other charities doing vital work.
We all know that football connects people. It builds community. It brings meaning to moments big and small. And in many ways, it mirrors our own journey; a story of special, sometimes spectacular moments underpinned by values that run deeper than the work itself.
Here’s to the next chapter, and to continuing to use our history, our platform and our passions to make a difference.
