Baker Mallett were proud to be a part of this important conservation project at Twycross Zoo.
Acting as Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor and Contract Administrator, the project team worked to create a new enclosure, one of the largest purpose-built Sumatran tiger habitats in the UK.
The enclosure, surrounded by a six-metre fence, provides a show den, back of house dens and keeper and service access. There are five viewing windows into the tiger habitat and a special 15m x 3m glazed walk through tunnel to provide an alternative perspective for visitors. The space also includes two outdoor pools and hot rocks to mimic the warmth of the animal’s native Indonesia.
With less than 400 Sumatran Tigers left in the wild, this new facility is incredibly important to the Zoo and the larger conservation and breeding programmes that they are a vital part of. The zoo is home to more than 500 animals of 125 species, including some of the rarest in the world.
