Construction Auditing
The independent audit and provision of confidential services, collating, analysing and reporting on pay and productivity is an essential aspect of effective management of major projects and the control of industrial relations.
Baker Mallett has provided this Specialist Construction Auditing service on many major construction sites throughout the UK since 1977.
What is it?
Construction Auditing is a service designed to ensure operatives are correctly paid; to provide factual information to assist client and management Groups in their task of monitoring and improving performance and industrial relations on major construction projects.
How does it work?
-
A Site Industrial Relations Code of Practice and/or a Supplementary Site agreement will be prepared by the Client/The Management Group or by Baker Mallett, to set down the ground rules on all matters concerning employment and productivity of the construction workforce
-
Baker Mallett will, by means of specially developed audit programmes, carry out detailed audits of all Contractors to ensure their compliance with the stipulated site agreements. The level and frequency of these audits will be agreed with the Client and tailored to suit the needs of the project
-
Monthly audit reports will be produced to record any discrepancies observed and to tabulate statistical data on bookstrength, hours of work, payments made, productivity rates, accidents, disputes etc
-
The audit procedures are designed to be pro-active and Baker Mallett will interview all Contractors before work commences on site to ensure that they have a full understanding of site requirements, observed discrepancies will be discussed and corrective action agreed
Why is it needed, What are the benefits?
-
Under the NAECI (The National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry) the audit function is mandatory on all "nominated" sites
-
This agreement generally covers all mechanical and electrical construction work, however we find that on many projects Clients require an overview of all Contractors including building, civil engineering and specialist Contractors
-
The benefits are the prevention/minimising of poor industrial relations and working practices which, if left unchecked result in disputes and high levels of lost time and the consequent adverse effect on performance and progress
-
The statistical data provided will also be of considerable use in the planning and cost monitoring of the project and for future projects
