Baker Mallett were appointed by English Heritage to provide quantity surveying services on the conservation repairs project at Furness Abbey.

The ruined Abbey of St Mary of Furness is a grade l listed Ruin and Scheduled Monument, designated as such because it is a rare example of a house of the Savignac order which was subsequently amalgamated with the Cistercian order. The Abbey was founded in the 12th Century and consists of a complex which includes the Abbey Church, East Range, Cloister, Infirmary, Abbot’s House, Frater and Guest House. Entered from the North, the Abbey lies between Barrow-in-Furness and Dalton.

Baker Mallett are delighted to have acted as Quantity Surveyor on this restoration scheme with key factors including vegetation removal, removal of loose materials, repointing and stone replacements.

The works will reduce the vulnerability, improve condition and ensure the site remains in “substantial condition” for an extensive period of time.

The project is the continuation of phased conservation works to ensure the structural stability of the Presbytery Walls and West Tower, Infirmary and East Range, which have all been identified as being vulnerable to deterioration.
